Internet for your flat in Germany

DSL, cable, fibre or a 5G router? How to get Wi-Fi in your WG or student flat, who signs the contract and which plans you can cancel every month.

Updated

You've found a room, now you need Wi-Fi. Sort out these things early and your first weeks will be a lot easier.

First check what's already there

  • Dorm: Many student dorms run their own network. Then you don't need your own contract. Ask the dorm office.
  • WG or flat: Look at the sockets on the wall: phone socket (DSL), TV cable socket (cable) or a fibre box. The availability check on the providers' websites tells you what works at your exact address.

DSL, cable, fibre or mobile?

TechnologyGood atWatch out for
DSL / VDSLavailable almost everywherespeed depends on the distance to the street cabinet
Cablefast downloadsshared in the building, can be slower in the evening
Fibrevery fast and stable, good uploadnot available everywhere yet
LTE/5G routerworks right away, no line neededdepends on reception, sometimes limited data

How fast does it need to be?

  • 1–2 people, streaming and video calls: 50–100 Mbit/s are usually enough.
  • 3–4 people streaming, gaming and calling at the same time: 100–250 Mbit/s are comfortable.
  • Upload matters for video calls and cloud backups.

Who signs the contract?

An internet contract is always in one person's name. That person pays the provider and gets the letters. In a WG, write down who pays how much and what happens when someone moves out.

Monthly plans and setup fees

Many providers have Flex plans you can cancel every month. Watch the one-time setup fee, it's often charged even on short plans. If you stay a few months only, that fee makes up a big part of the cost.

Router and timing

In Germany you can use your own router, you don't have to rent one. Order as soon as you've signed your rental contract, because setup can take from a few days to a few weeks. Until then, a mobile plan with lots of data and a hotspot will do.

Moving within Germany

If you move and your provider can't offer the same service at the new address, you can cancel with one month's notice, even during a 24-month contract.
