Questions and answers
How fast should my internet be?
For 1 or 2 people 50 to 100 Mbit/s is usually enough, for a shared flat with 3 or 4 people 100 to 250 Mbit/s is comfortable. Also look at the upload if you have lots of video calls.
Is there a student discount for DSL, cable and fibre?
Yes. Telekom, Vodafone, 1&1 and PŸUR have Young plans for internet at home, NetCologne gives a discount with proof of studies or training.
Is there internet in student halls?
In many halls, yes. It is then usually included in the rent or run by the Studierendenwerk or a halls initiative, so you don’t need your own contract. Ask before you move in how fast it is and whether you can connect your own devices such as a console. If there is no internet, an LTE/5G router is usually the quickest solution.
Who signs the internet contract in a shared flat?
Always one person. They are the contract partner and liable for payment. Write down how you share the costs. More in Internet for your flat in Germany.
Do I have to rent the provider’s router?
No. Germany has router freedom, you can use your own router.
What happens to my contract when I move?
If the provider is available at your new address, the contract continues there. If it cannot deliver the agreed service, you can cancel with one month’s notice.
How long until the internet works?
From a few days to a few weeks, especially if a technician has to come. Order right after signing the rental agreement.
Is mobile internet as fast as DSL?
That depends on reception. With good LTE or 5G reception it can keep up with DSL, with weak reception it is much slower. Check the coverage map for your address.
Can I use the router anywhere?
Many plans for routers at home are tied to a fixed address. On the go there are separate data plans, or you use your phone’s hotspot.
