How we sort

Default: lowest average per month first. It adds up all costs over 24 months minus bonuses. Commissions don’t affect the order, plans without commission are listed too. Use “Sort by” to change the order.

How we compare

Buttons with * are affiliate links: if you sign up through them, we earn a commission. Your price stays the same and the order isn’t affected. Plans without * link straight to the provider.

5 tips for your mobile plan

Estimate your data realistically. More GB than you need costs money, too little is annoying.
Check the network where you live and study. The cheapest plan is no use without reception.
Take the Young benefits. More GB or a lower price, just because you are young.
Work out the total cost. Don’t look only at the monthly price.
Choose the term on purpose. If your plans are still open, stay flexible.

Questions and answers

Up to what age can I get a Young plan?

Every provider sets its own limit. Telekom and congstar: 18 to 27; Vodafone: 10 to 27; O2 and 1&1: 18 to 28; otelo: 18 to 29. The exact conditions are on each plan in the comparison.

Who gets a student plan?

Every provider decides for itself. For Young plans usually only your age counts. Real student plans also need proof that you are at school, in training or at university.

Is there a student discount on mobile contracts?

Yes, at the big providers it is usually called Young. Telekom, Vodafone, O2, 1&1, congstar and otelo give young people more data or a lower price. Almost always only your age counts, proof of studies is rarely needed.

Can I get a contract under 18?

Only with your parents’ consent. Usually the parents sign the contract themselves. To start with, prepaid is the safer choice.

Contract or prepaid: which is better?

A contract makes sense if you want lots of data and can commit for 24 months. Prepaid suits you if you want full cost control or are under 18. You find both in the comparison above, more in Prepaid SIM card in Germany.

Which network is the best?

That depends on where you live, study and travel. The providers’ coverage maps show the coverage at your address. Ask friends nearby which network works well for them.

Can I keep my number?

Yes. You can take a German number to a new provider at any time. A number from home stays on your old SIM, most phones can run two numbers. How to set up an eSIM
